Energy Management System (EnMS)

ISO 50001

Energy is a topic that is on everyone’s agenda, from governments who are eager to support energy efficient drives via legislation and voluntary schemes, to organizations of all sizes who want to manage and reduce their energy consumption due to the increased energy costs.

Designed to support organizations in all sectors, this ISO standard provides a practical way to improve energy use, through the development of an energy management system (EnMS). ISO 50001, an international standard on energy management system, was originally published in June 2011.

The ISO 50001 standard offers a systematic framework for organizations to manage energy and provides requirements for a systematic, data driven and facts-based process, focused on improving energy performance. This framework specifies the measurements, documents, and reports, which enable organizations to monitor the progress of their processes and employees towards energy performance.

ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.

The standard promotes the adoption of energy management best practices and reinforces good energy management behaviors. According to the ISO, the standard could influence up to 60% of the world's energy use, with broad applicability across national economic sectors.
ISO 50001 provides guidance for companies in implementing an Energy Management System (EnMS) that aims at improving efficiency in the use of energy. Over 20,000 certifications have been issued for this standard with a 69% increase from 2015.

ISO 50001 requires organizations to establish new policies for an efficient use of energy, to set aims and objectives to meet those policies and review their impacts; genuinely attempting to achieve continuous improvements of energy management. The standard does not have any reduction targets; it is left to each organization to set its own targets and to establish an EnMS in order to constantly enhance performance.

ISO 50001 is not only a global best practice model for comprehensive and strategic energy management, but also serves as a global benchmark for climate and clean energy action. Energy management systems based on ISO 50001 best practices are often key elements of energy efficiency policies around the world for large energy users, as well as small to medium enterprises.

Energy Management System (EnMS)

EnMS integrates energy management into existing business systems, enabling organizations to better manage their energy, sustain achieved savings, and continuously improve energy performance.

EnMS is a suite of procedures and practices that ensure systematic tracking, analysis, and planning of energy use through a Plan-Do-Check-Act framework of continual improvement.

Benefits of ISO 50001 Energy Management

Certifying your energy management system to the ISO 50001 standard may benefit your organization in many ways. A certified management system confirms that you are working structured and strategically to reduce the organizations environmental footprint and that you are committed to further improvement of environmental management. Certification to the standard can contribute to:
  1. Improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and energy consumption.
  2. Reducing environmental impact, including greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Credible market communication about energy performance efforts.
  4. Existing energy-consuming assets can be increased and quality management behaviors and best practices developed.
  5. Quantitative testing of the effect of new energy-efficient technologies upon the organization is enabled.
  6. Create transparency and facilitate communication on the management of energy resources.
  7. Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritizing the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies.
  8. Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency throughout the supply chain.
  9. Allow integration with other organizational management systems such as environmental, and health and safety.
  10. Increase employees’ awareness and motivation toward a more efficient use of energy.

Steps to ISO 50001 Certification

  1. Preliminary Audit: Performing an initial assessment and flushing out potential vulnerabilities in the management system.
  2. GAP Analysis: Analysis to support you in successfully converting from ISO 50001:2011 to ISO 50001:2018.
  3. Certification Audit: Checking your documentation and practical application of your energy management system.
  4. Surveillance Audits: Annual surveillance of the ongoing optimization of your processes and energy management system.
  5. Re-certification: before the end of three years.

FAQs:

ISO 50001 provides a framework of requirements for organizations to:

  • Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy.
  • Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy.
  • Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use.

An energy management system (EMS) is a system of computer-aided tools used by operators of electric utility grids to monitor, control, and optimize the performance of the generation or transmission system. Also, it can be used in small scale systems like micro-grids.

ISO 14001 considers energy from the perspective of environmental impact, but it does not stress on energy reduction. This aspect is taken into consideration by ISO 50001, and its total focus is on energy.

For organizations that already have an Environmental Management System, the EnMS implementation will be uncomplicated as several of the management systems and practices will already be in place.

Although, it is not mandatory to have ISO 14001 before ISO 50001 is adopted, as ISO 50001 is a standalone standard and can be adopted regardless of any management systems that already exist.
